Community Power stations
Most of these people can not afford the national Grid power no matter what the government does to take the power to them. Sometimes they languish in darkness due to lack of paraffin for lighting their tin&wick candles. They are the majority of our population and wherever they live either in city slums or poor rural settings their lives are no better! LED lights have revolutionized lighting bringing the cost of owning good light to very minimum. However LED lights use battery power which needs to be recharged. We have designed battery charging kiosks for poor communities. These charging centres are owned/bought by the community managed and run by them. they charge fairly for battery charging. Each home within the cluster owns a battery and an LED lighting circuit installed in the homes (a one-off cost of Ksh 2,500/=). They spend Ksh 30/= per month to recharge their batteries.
Every community in rural Africa now has an opportunity to enjoy electricity power by owning a power project. We have designed and installed standalone community power to serve several homes. Our wind turbines generate power and store it in big battery banks, then our state of the art inverters (pure sine wave) take over and change the voltage for home use. These inverters have dummy use protection including short circuit protection, automatic reset, fault reporting features etc. With a regulated voltage control the installation has all the necessary safety procedures needed.
We have to take action and find solutions for our problems in rural Africa. We are blessed with ever breezy coastal and lake regions, hills and vast plains which are wind generating zones. There might not be perennial rivers but the immense energy in the wind above our roofs flows untapped, hamming away sometime a threat to our roofs. For decades electrical cables seen in our towns have not arrived in our rural villages where we live. Our homes are neglected our farm produce do not fetch the prices they deserve while middlemen come and exploit us due to poor or lack of infrastructure. We can change this picture by using our own power to process and package our own milk, fruits, grain and vegetables. We can start small industries and employ our young people.
