Goe Standalone Community Power StationIn the hills of Sagalla Taita-Taveta District a community of 30 homes has come together to own a power station run on wind energy. This project is using one of the industrial size machines CS120TDR providing these homes with 12Kilowatts in total. So far we have been able to link only 3,000watts in the homes. This community is located over 25Km from the nearest national Grid line, has bad roads and no telephone link. Thanks to the GSM technology many people now own mobile phones.
Here the face of a village is changing forever with the availability of electricity.
View of Goe from Dambi hills, notice the valley in the middle forming our wind dam.
Clearing the bush on the site. Local manpower was available to provide labour.
Tower foundation starting.
Ballast, boulders and spirit level.
Concrete setting.
First 20 feet up.
40 feet lattice tower up. To the left of this picture is a steep cliff.
View of whole tower from the bottom. The tower is made thinner at the top so that the 16 feet span prop can turn without touching it.
Wind turbine mounted. This 100Kg generator was hoisted up using a heavy gauge gin pole. It is sitting on a 6inch diameter trailer bearing. The span area of the fiberglass prop is 16 feet with a maximum silent speed of approx' 600RPM. The voltage from the turbine tops at 380VAC at 55HZ -- this voltage is stepped-down to 60volts and rectified. Power is supplied from the power house by big inverters to more than 30 homes, a school and a dispensary.
